The School of Law, Ajeenkya DY Patil University is conducting a Webinar on ‘Gender Biased Sex Selective Elimination & Implementation of PC&PNDT Act, 1994.’

Gender biased sex selection is a discriminatory practice against girls which is embedded in a complex net of socio-economic and cultural factors. It is pertinent to note that the micro-level studies conducted by UN Women, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNDP, WHO and UNRCO particularly with reference to the Asian countries and in India itself, have identified inter alia the determinants namely, strong patriarchal values/ norms manifested through male-centric practices, hypergamy, access to unregulated technology and traditions undermining the human rights of women and unborn child.

In the Indian context, the policies, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme and laws have aimed at restoring gender equality and have played a protective and/or preventive role by subverting gender-biased sex selection. However, the incidences of female foeticide continue to be reported creating a need for assessing the efficacy of the legal framework.

In order to align with the global efforts for renewed attention in a post-pandemic era and for ending all forms of discrimination, including son preference and gender-biased sex selection the webinar is organized.

29th August is marked as the National sports day in India. It is celebrated in honour of the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand Singh on his Birth anniversary who won not only one but three gold medals for India in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936. He is the only hockey player who has won the Padma Bhushan Award. He also won the Olympic Gold medal six times in a row for India in hockey. At the Berlin Olympic Games of 1936.

To celebrate this day we at ADYPU are holding a short quiz in connection with sports and will have two wonderful guests with us who will tell us about why and how sports play an important role in our lives.
