International Women's Day is celebrated every year on March 8, to highlight the achievements made by women across different fields. The day also intends to create awareness among women to take a stand for themselves and fight against gender discrimination in society. On this day, people across the globe are called to witness the amazing achievements made by women and also participate in different kinds of activities.
The day was first marked on 28th February 1909, when The Socialist Party of America coined it ‘National Women’s Day’ in support of striking garment workers. From the early 1900s onwards it shifted to 8and became a day used to highlight women’s suffrage amongst other causes. In 1975 the UN made it official and so we had our modern International Women’s Day as we know it now. Over 100 years on from the original Women’s Day, there’s still so much that needs to be changed and these are changes that we need now more than ever.th March
Why do we celebrate Women’s Day?
‘International Women’s Day is a collective day of global celebration and a call for gender parity,’ the official IWD website states. ‘International Women’s Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action – whatever that looks like globally at a local level. But one thing is for sure, International Women’s Day has been occurring for well over a century – and continues to grow from strength to strength.’
1) Some people think that International Women’s Day is just for women, and consequently, anti-men. International Women’s Day is for women and men – everyone is welcome. The day is about gender equality, and in order to achieve that we must elevate women.
2) The Global Gender Gap Report 2021 found that at our current rate, it will take another 135.6 years to achieve equality between men and women globally.
3) The character of the Joker has won the same number of Oscars as the whole of womankind ever has for directing.
4) Women make up 70% of the health workforce but hold fewer leadership positions than men in the sector.
5) Women are taking on three times as much domestic work as men
6) 181 million girls and young women are not in education, employment or training.
7) 72 countries don’t allow women to open a bank account.
Women are an important part of society. They are strong, independent, fearless, divine, and compassionate just like the song written by Beyonce 'Run the World (Girls),' and this day is a reminder of the same.
